The August issue of Seattle Metropolitan is out, and it features really nice beach shots by Olympian photographer Ryan James Hunt (who had just two landscape photos in the portfolio that he showed me when I met him in June, because he’s more interested in shooting models than places).
I redesigned the TOC in July, taking it from two pages to one. Here’s August’s:
I made this quick and simple illustration using a provided photo:
Here are some pages from the beaches cover package:
Here’s the opening spread for the Top Docs feature, designed by Samantha Gardner and illustrated by Aaron Thomas Roth:
I wanted the Recession Survival Guide to look very thrifty, so I presented it as though it was printed in black and white, cheaply bound and then highlighted by hand:
(When I was conceiving this layout back in June, we received a manuscript with the same kind of binding I had in mind, so I photographed it for reference:)
Erwin Sherman illustrated these:
I made my binding in InDesign and Photoshop:
(Another reference shot:)
And finally, I got illustrator Nigel Buchanan to illustrate our Backfence column.
I’m really excited to be working with him on this. I just received his illustration for September’s column last week, and it looks great.
I love the binding on the Recession Guide. Everything looks awesome.
